NordVPN

Use it for a secure connections when you’re travelling.

NordVPN is a famous VPN provider that also happen to be my go-to VPN. It’s one of the fastest VPN providers out there, as well as being available on all major operating systems.

Having a VPN is essential especially when travelling when you might be using many, non-secure networks, such as public wifi connections. NordVPN protects your online privacy and virtual location. Online traffic is secured via encryption, meaning you’re protected from hijacks and potential data hacks.

Additionally, if you want to access your streaming services such as Netflix, a VPN will help you access your account as you can set your VPN location to your country of residence, or any other country for that matter.

I’ve been using NordVPN already for the past couple of years and I’m very happy with it. It’s easy to install and with just one click, you’re already connected to a VPN server.

Hopper

Use it for planning your travels and the best time to get the best flight deals

Hopper not only has a cute bunny mascot but is also super useful when trying to find the best deal for a certain flight. It will show you the best rate that can be found at the present time and also you if you should wait to book, as prices might drop further in the future. Without going too much into details, the algorithm that is used works like a charm and allows you to save some $$$ in your trips.

For one of our (sort of) upcoming trips to Miami, the cute bunny advised me to wait as the current best price (which then was 470€ return) might have dropped in the future and indeed two weeks later a notification popped up telling me that the flight dropped to 390€!

80€ saved just thanks to the Hopper App.

Nomad List

Use it when planning your next digital nomad destination

Nomad List has quickly risen the ranks in the last couple of years to become the website to search and find worldwide, digital nomad destination information, such as prices for accommodation, internet speed, safety (e.g. for women), weather information, and a lot more. When you have the paid subscription, more destination-specific content will be available to you and you can also see who has checked in at a certain destination and connect with them via meet ups.

It’s a great resource for inspiration, when you’re searching for your next digital nomad destination, as well as more specific information about a certain city. You can see which city is currently a digital nomad top destination, as there is a ranking that is updated in real-time.

Unfortunately, the owner of the site has recently put up the paywall for most of the content, so you will need to pay to see more specific content, though I think it’s definitely worth it.

Google Flights

Use it for comparing flight connections and prices

Google Flights is the best flight comparison website in my opinion, because of the handy ‘date grid’ where you can see on which departure/return dates your flight is the cheapest. The filter options are also superior to other flight comparison websites, such as selecting your preferred airline(s). Another handy feature is that you can select multiple departure city and arrival city options, if you are flexible regarding that, and Google Flights will show you the cheapest options looking at all the flights connections between your selected cities.

I also like that the website tells you whether a flight price is low or expensive compared to the average prices. Another nifty feature is that you can select ‘track prices’ for your flight search and it will send you updates when the price goes up or down.

Saily

Use this app for easy access to eSims that let you be connected from almost anywhere in the world

Saily is an eSim provider that easily let’s you download eSims in many different countries, especially the countries that are popular for digital nomads.

An eSim is super convenient as you just need to download the Simcard to your phone, activate it and you are able to receive calls, have internet etc in a foreign country. Just make sure first that your phone is compatible with an eSim (although nowadays, most phones manufactured after 2018 should be compatible, unless you have a really old one).

What I like about Saily is that you only need to download the eSim once, so you don’t need to download a new eSim every time you’re in a new country. You can easily top up your plan when you run out of data via the Saily app.

Tripit

Use this to have all your reservation details in a single app.

In a single screen, TripIt will list all your upcoming flights and stays in a nice and clean fashion. You can create an account for free and send all your booking confirmations to TripIt, or you can opt to let the app scan your mailbox for the confirmation emails (which work extremely well).

It’s super handy that the app also stores basic information such as addresses of accommodations and hotels, flight times, check-in times and much more, which can all be viewed offline as well. This could be extremely helpful when perhaps you are in a taxi and you don’t have your accommodations address at hand.

They also have a paid version where you get a bunch of extra services like fare trackers, Check in reminders, international travel tools and much more.

Fairytrail

Use this app to meet likeminded digital nomads during your travels

Are you longing to meet like-minded nomads during your travels abroad? Fairytrail is a relatively new app that lets you connect with other nomads, who share the same interests as you.

For example, if you’re looking for someone to travel with who is just as adventurous as you, you could find that someone on Fairytrail! The app can be used for both dating and finding friends, just like other app such as Bumble.

GetYourGuide

Use this app to find the perfect activity or tour at your destination

GetYourGuide is my favourite app to browse activities and things to do in destinations around the world. It’s very easy to find activities in different categories, such as nature, cultural, sightseeing and other guided tours. I really like how the app and website are structured to quickly find the right activity.

Have a look at all the activities that are offered on GetYourGuide at your next destination or your current city.
