6 Best Digital Nomad Insurances: A Comparison
Living life on the road as a digital nomad is an exhilarating adventure. Yet, it's essential to have the right insurance coverage to protect against unexpected challenges. In this blog post, we'll introduce you to six top-notch digital nomad insurance providers: Safety Wing, Insured Nomads, Heymondo, Genki, PassportCard and True Traveller.
I have done some extensive research on their insurance policies and in this blog post I'll compare them and discuss the pros and cons of each, helping you make an informed decision for your digital nomad insurance.

Safety Wing
I’m starting with Safety Wing because they are always my go-to choice when I’m buying insurance for my digital nomad travels.
Their insurance plans are the best value you can get when you compare all the different plans. One of the key differentiators for me is just the user experience of the website and service overall. Safety Wing offers the “Nomad Insurance“ which is a global travel health insurance.
Also looking at other reviews, Safety Wing always comes out on top as the provider with the best value for money, by very far.
Overview Nomad Insurance plan
Pros:
You can get the insurance while you are already traveling
Coverage for multiple trips
Monthly affordable subscription model
Coverage for home country available, provided you have 90 days abroad
Cons:
Claims process can be lengthy
High risk sports activities not covered
Need an international drivers license in case of scooter accidents
Price:
Starts at $45.08 every 4 months - depending on which add ons you select (e.g. travel in US, sport activities, higher age bracket) the price increases
Health coverage:
Access a qualified global network of hospitals and doctors for unexpected medical problems and accidents. Includes coverage for doctors, hospitals, emergency medical evacuation.
Medical treatment for Covid-19 is included
Maximum limit: $250,000 with an initial deductible of $250
Technology coverage:
You can get an additional add-on for theft coverage for your electronics.
Up to $3000 is covered ($1000 per electronic device)
Travel coverage:
Includes coverage for travel delay, lost checked luggage, emergency response & natural disasters, personal liability
Exceptions:
Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered
High risk sports activities are not covered

Insured Nomads is another travel insurance designed for digital nomads and world travellers. They have 4 different plans, and we’ll take a look at the World Explorer Plan.
Overview World Explorer Plan
Pros:
Low deductibles ($0 also available)
Many different kinds of plans (even for travel to warzones!) and many customisation options
Easy online sign-up process
They have some interesting benefits such as lounge access for delayed flights, cybersecurity & mental health counseling (including an INC app)
24/7 support and emergency hotline
Cons:
More expensive than other insurance plans
Some plans only available for US residents
You need to define your travel period and when you return to your home country
Price:
A insurance for one month starts at around $100 (for an individual aged 30-39)
Health coverage:
Coverage from $250,000 to $2,000,000 (you can choose). You can also choose what deductable you want to pay,
24 hour emergency medical care

Acute onset of pre-existing condition

Heymondo travel insurance offers flexible travel & health insurance for digital nomads. You can choose between single trip, annual multi trip or long stay plans. For digital nomads, I would say the Long Stay Plan would be the best option

Pros:
Many things included in the policy, including medical and travel services
You can sign up also while you are already traveling
24/7 medical chat & the Heymondo app
Many customisation options
Cons:
Customers over 49 are not eligible for trips longer than 30 days
You need to pay upfront for minimum 3 months for the long stay plan
No medical coverage for pre-existing conditions
Price:
Starts at US$140 for 3 months (all countries except USA). The long stay plan requires you to pay for 90 days, with option to extend (US$47 renewal for another 30 days)

Emergency medical & dental expenses overseas

Zones of armed conflict are excluded
Some adventure sports are not included (unless you get the add on)

Genki World Explorer
Genki is another insurance tailored to digital nomads needs. They have probably the best medical coverage of all the digital nomad insurance providers. They are backed by Allianz Partners, which is one of the biggest and most reliable insurance providers in the world. This insurance is more focused on medical coverage, as there are no options for travel insurance.

Cons:
Doesn’t cover any other travel related costs such as lost luggage or travel delays.
It’s one of the pricier insurance plans out there. It also gets much pricer the older you are

PassportCard Nomads
Hailed as being one of the more innovative digital nomad travel insurances, PassportCard Nomads is a travel insurance that gives you a card which you can use directly to pay for any medical expenses when the need arises. So you don’t have to wait for your claim to be processed which can take a long time with many insurance companies.
There are a few plan to choose from, such as the Remote plan and the Comfort plan. Let’s take a look at the Remote plan

Pros:
Pay your expenses in real time with your PassportCard. No need to request claims
24/7 support
No deductible
The remote plan is ideal for nomads who are not planning to come back home or are traveling full-time. So it’s highly flexible

High cost per month (and more expensive in Europe for some reason
Limited coverage for travel insurance such as loss of baggage & extreme/adventure sports
No coverage fro trip delays/cancellations
On trustpilot it doesn’t have as high a rating as the other insurance companies listed in this blog post

True Traveller is another travel insurance option for European or UK residents. We’ll be looking at the Traveller plan which also includes coverage for things like travel delay. There is also a cheaper plan available (True Value) but as it lacks some basic things, so we’ll look at the more expensive plan.
